In 2021, Wunmi saw an opportunity to participate in a new initiative she had seen advertised in her local London Borough where she resided. The opportunity was about stepping up to be part of a community steering group who would make a collective decision about how an endowment fund would be invested.
I had no keen interest in money matters until I got into the world of entrepreneurship and knew that money and the way it is spent were important aspects of business. Being a creative at heart especially one who had struggled to pass Mathematics as a subject, I had never really being interested in how money was invested, where and why? But that was going to change when I dediced to embrace the opportunity provided by Barking and Dagenham Giving and step into the role of being a community steering group member. It took two years of learning, growing, participating and collective decision making to shape the endowment fund which has now become the investment fund for BD Giving.
Through this experience I gained immense understanding and first class experience of the impact social investments and participatory grant-making can make for businesses that are good for people, planet and community. And now, I’m on a journey of re-imagining the use of money and resources. All of my experiences as a woman in business and a community changemaker is leading to a pathway I never dreamt before. I hope you can join me as I seek to do a lot more good with money and make its distribution more fair and more equitable.
